UMMUN Crunch Time

This is going to be the exact same stuff as what was on the papers you all received on Friday.

The PTO has agreed to cover the cost of registration. They are paying $60 per person, which is a huge help.

That being said, the total remaining balance for everyone to pay is $80. This money is due Wednesday, 1/9. Also, if you haven't turned in your forms yet, they need to be turned in ASAP.

SCHEDULE FOR SUPER-CRAZY WEEK

Monday, 1/7 - We will be doing research in the HHS Library after school. If you want to come to do research together, or if you have questions, this would be a great time to do so.

Tuesday, 1/8 - Meeting in Talberg's room. We will be discussing parliamentary procedure, resolution writing, and research status. Everyone really should try to come to this meeting.

Wednesday, 1/9 - MANDATORY Meeting in Talberg's room. This is crunch time day. Your final position papers need to be done by this date. We will be collecting them at the meeting if you have them. We are going to be holding a general mock U.N. session, and then mock sessions for each committee. This is also when your remaining money balance and permission forms are due. We will also be confirming the plan for getting to the conference and addressing any concerns you might have.

Thursday, 1/10 - Departing for UMMUN 2008 after school. We are carpooling, and arrangements will be finalized at one of our meetings.

Thursday night thru Sunday afternoon - UMMUN!

KEY THINGS TO KNOW
>Money, Forms, and Position Papers due Wednesday 1/9
>The cost of food is not included in your $80 payment, so bring money for food at the conference. There is a small continental breakfast at the hotel, like muffins and coffee or something. There is a food court area in the Union (where UMMUN takes place) which costs less, and several restaurants downtown Ann Arbor. We also choose one night to go out to eat together. Plan accordingly.
>There is a clothing requirement for the conference. You need to dress up somewhat nicely. They call it "Western business attire". Basically, no jeans, t-shirts, or sweatshirts. If you're a guy, wear a shirt and tie with some nice pants and shoes, If you're a girl, wear a nice blouse and dress pants or skirt with nice shoes. Suits are encouraged for both guys and girls, too. It's pretty simple.
>We miss a day of school (Friday 1/11), so make sure your teachers are aware.

That's all, see you on Tuesday!

Next Meeting - Tuesday, December 18

Hello all MUN-ers.

We are having a special meeting next Tuesday. Not Wednesday. It seems a lot of people are struggling with Wednesday meetings, so we're going to try out a Tuesday.

At this past week's meeting, we basically just answered questions you might have about position papers and research. Also, UMMUN Background Guides are up on the UMMUN site! Make sure that you get yours if you didn't attend the meeting. We have a copy for everyone, but they are also available online.

Rough drafts of your position papers are due on Tuesday, so try not to forget. They don't have to be formal or anything, just an outline of your country's positions. We'd like to get an idea on how people are doing.

Also, next week's meeting is the last before holiday break, so we're going to do some nifty things. It will probably last for a full hour, so try to arrange to stay the entire time if you can.

Thanks you guys. Keep researching! See you all on Tuesday.

Just for everyone's info, if people are still interested in UMMUN. Here's the most up to date country listings.

Denmark
Alex V - SPECPOL
Hannah - WHO
Jessica - HRC
Keana - SOCHUM
Australia
Allison - WHO
Kaitlyn - HRC
Scuff - DISEC
Jordan - SOCHUM

If you're still interested in joining, there is one position available on DISEC and SPECPOL and two positions in ECOFIN. Also, you can't double delegate in SPECPOL, but you can double delegate in any other committee, so if you want to work together with friends, this would be great for you.

See everyone who plans to go to UMMUN on Wednesday!

NEXT MEETING - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5 (and yesterday's meeting recap)

Just a huge reminder to everyone who intends to go to UMMUN. Next week's December 5th meeting is MANDATORY. You don't have to attend the entire meeting, although it is recommended. You just need to swing by to ensure your position and that's fine. Your $20 deposit and the main permision slip are due then too. If you don't have the forms, you can stop by Talberg's room, although he changes where he is throughout the day.

We have 1 new country/committee assignment.
Alex D. - Australia - ECOFIN

Remember, next meeting is your LAST CHANCE to get registered for UMMUN if you want to go. We're going to try to uber-poster the school so everyone that intends to go can remember. It's really a fun experience and Jordan and I have worked out a calendar with things to do, so it's a lot more organized now.
We are also starting to see about sponsorship. We contacted the PTA about getting a donation and are drafting a letter to send to local businesses. We are also going to get T-shirts, get a few newspaper articles written, and try to have that "restaurant night" thing. Anyone who would be willing to volunteer with any of these tasks, please comment below.
That's pretty much everything for now. PLEASE COMMENT about volunteering or about country/committee assignments. It's on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Thanks guys. See you ALL next week.
:)

Meeting Recap

Hey guys.
Well, firstly, I'd like to thank the FOUR people who showed up to today's emergency meeting. Meeting attendance is VERY IMPORTANT, guys. We need you to be at meetings, or at least check the blog. If you can't come, let someone know ahead of time or comment on the blog.
The current country/committee assignments are as follows:
____Denmark
Alex V - SPECPOL
Valerie - WHO
Jessica - HRC
____Australia
Hannah and Allison - WHO (double delegating)
Kaitlyn - HRC

SOCHUM, DISEC, and ECOFIN are still completely open committees. SPECPOL is open for Australia. If need be, we will see about double delegating to accomodate everyone.

Next meeting is Wednesday, November 28 at 3:00 in A210. If you intend to come to UMMUN, attendance is HIGHLY advised. We'll be starting to have workshops to prepare us for UMMUN. Additionally, attendance at the December 5th meeting is mandatory, or at least a quick stop by. We need to get a final count on who is attending UMMUN. December 5th is also when your $20 deposit is due.

See everyone (hopefully) on Wednesday. Feel free to comment on the blog here.

Oh! Happy Thanksgiving Break! :)

Next Meeting - Thursday, November 15

Hello all. Jessica's posting ability is being funky, so I'm typing up this post.
I know it was unannounced, but we are going to be having a meeting on Thursday, November 15 at 3:00. There will be food. Three weeks between our last meeting and our next one is just too long of a time period, especially seeing as how we have so much work to do.
Here's what needs to be done:

1. The determination of country and committee assignments.
If you can't come to the meeting tomorrow, please leave your country/committee preferences as a comment on this blog with your name clearly understandable in the comments section. There's a "comments" button at the end of this post where you can do so. We need to know this by Thursday at 3:00. Or find someone in the club that's going to the meeting and tell them what you prefer. Please limit your committee selections to only 2 or 3 maximum. Again, sorry for the late notice.

2. FUNDRAISING.
We've decided to go with trying to get sponsors and place them on the back of T-shirts. We've also decided to try and do a night at a restaurant where we get some of the earnings, like what choir did at Bennigan's. We need people to volunteer to contact different businesses. It would be best to meet with these businesses in person, and I think it would be more convincing if small groups went together and had a set of points they spoke on to receive sponsorships. Officers will probably head these groups, and talking points will be discussed, recorded and distributed. We are hoping to raise a lot of money quickly, so this will take a lot of cooperation between everyone. Thanksgiving Break would be a good time to be doing this.

3. Getting people involved.
We are down to crunch time. If you know people who would like to join, they need to join NOW. Remember, DEADLINE FOR $20 DEPOSIT IS DECEMBER 5. People need to really come to our meeting on Wednesday, November 28 if they can't make this one to learn about all the things we need to do and pick up forms for UMMUN. For those who cannot participate in the UMMUN conference, we are still optimistic for attending another conference this year. Keep checking the blog for more info.

4. Getting prepared.
I'm going to try and get a bunch of "workshops" arranged for when we return from break. It's vital that we start researching countries and committees as well as practicing UMMUN procedure and public speaking. Speaking can be daunting, but it would be great if everyone could get as much out of this as possible, and practice can help ease fears.

That's pretty much it, I think. I hope to see everyone at the meeting tomorrow or see posts in the comments section. Thanks everyone.
